Step 2: Meet the Personal Trainer

We met with our personal trainer - Cheryl - last week. This woman is going to kick our butts big time. She is a former body builder and has spent the majority of her adult life in fitness.

In our first session we outlined our goal - to be fabulously f'n fit at forty - and what that entailed. We told her about how we wanted to be fit, toned, slim, and feel comfortable walking down the beach in a bikini next year. We talked about our past injuries, allergies, our busy schedules and how we are going to fit this whole training thing in. She was very supportive as she experienced this major milestone recently herself and is balancing being a mom and an active career.

I was really encouraged by her attitude toward food. In her opinion, weight is 80% what we put in our mouths and the rest is physical activity. She seems very knowledgeable about food and food sensitivities which is important as I have a gluten intolerance. This week, she'll be designing a meal plan for us that will cut out all red meat, dairy, breads (no problem for me!) and other bad foods.

We were able to choose between a cheat meal or a cheat day. With a cheat meal you can eat whatever you want for two hours that day. The cheat day is that times 24 hrs. She warned us that the more we cheat, the longer our results will take to realize. We chose one cheat meal a week. Whether we utilize this cheat is completely up to us, but it's there if we want it.

I'm looking forward to getting started on this full life transformation and hope that I can stick with it and really make a difference in my body and how it feels. It'll be interesting to see what the meal plan entails and how I can incorporate it into my crazy schedule. Working upwards of 60 hrs a week doesn't typically lend itself to eating well. This will be a true test of my will power and how much I really want these results!

Next week, we have four training sessions over four days! Wish us luck!

Step 1: Join the Gym

Today, I took Step 1 of the FFFF plan....I joined a gym.

Now, I've joined gyms before and had every intention of utilizing the gym and never did. Why is this time going to be different? Well, I took an additional step this time - I hired a personal trainer. 12 gruelling, body crunching sessions with a trainer who's going to kick my butt into shape.

The great thing is that my friend joined with me and we're taking this challenge together! We both turn 40 next year and this was her original idea (she's so smart sometimes!). Our birthdays are about two weeks apart and it's great motivation to keep up with her.

So the two of us are now card carrying members of a local gym. We'll get our fitness assessments next week which could be scary. It's one thing to think you are out of shape. It's another thing completely to have someone tell you that you really are out of shape...and how badly!

Let the butt kickin' begin.

The Plan

Here's the plan: To be fabulously f*&^ing fit at forty.

In six months, I turn 40. This particular milestone doesn't really bother me all that much. Really it doesn't. Yes, I remember thinking 40 was really freakin' old (way back when), but to be honest, I'm loving my age more and more each year.

I remember hitting 30 and thinking "wow, this is 30 eh?" The great thing about being 30 was that I knew who I wanted to be and who I was at that time. I was quite comfortable in my own skin for the first time in my life. My 30s were great years. I got married just before I turned 30. My daughter graduated grade school and started high school...and was a great kid through it all! The last ten years have been some of the happiest years of my life.

As I look to the next ten years, I'm thinking less about psychological fitness and more about physical fitness. I'm not in completely horrible shape, sure I could lose a few pounds, but that's not the issue for me. I want to be really fit and firm. I want to be able to run up a flight of stairs and not be winded. I want to be able to feel comfortable walking down the beach in a bathing suit. Not necessarily a string bikini, but not your garden variety one-piece grandma suite either!
The plan is to get into great physical shape and stay that way well into the next series of decades in my life.

Fabulously F&^$ing Fit at Forty....that's the plan.
